Chapter 204 - 205: Beginning of a hunt
Chapter 204 - 205: Beginning of a hunt
The sky above the sprawling city had been a terrifying canvas of brilliant gold and deep crimson just moments ago. Ren stood completely frozen on the cracked pavement of the sidewalk.
His wide eyes were locked on the heavens above, and his mind was struggling to process the impossible sight. The sheer scale of the colors made it feel as though the world was coming to an absolute end.
But then, as suddenly as it had started, the magnificent and terrifying colors began to bleed away. The unnatural glow faded back into the mundane, dark hues of the evening sky.
All around Ren, the frantic screams of the city residents began to die down. People stopped pointing at the clouds and stopped running for their lives. They started to rationalize the terrifying phenomenon that had just occurred.
Ren could hear them whispering to each other, pointing at the now empty sky, and muttering that it must have been some kind of weird lightning storm. The sheer ignorance of the masses was almost comical, but Ren had no time to laugh or even smile.
Despite the sky returning to a normal state, the streets were still entirely chaotic. The initial panic had pushed everyone out of their buildings.
Now, thousands of people who had fled their homes and offices were crowding the roads and sidewalks, creating a massive and suffocating sea of bodies. Traffic was entirely jammed. Cars were abandoned in the middle of intersections. Horns blared continuously into the night air, adding to the overwhelming noise of the restless crowd.
Ren snapped out of his dazed state and started moving. He had to get away immediately. He began to cruise through the massive crowds, violently pushing his way past confused pedestrians.
Anna was right behind him. She moved through the panicked crowd with an unnatural grace, her eyes completely locked onto his presence. She was following him exactly like a moth attracted to a bright and burning flame.
No matter how many shoulders Ren bumped into, and no matter how many angry pedestrians cursed at him for shoving them, he could not shake her off his trail.
His head was throbbing with intense pain. It was not just a simple headache. It was a relentless barrage of terrifying warnings echoing inside his skull. His instincts were screaming at him at the highest possible volume.
Every single nerve in his body felt like it was on fire, telling him that he was in immense danger and that he was about to die a horrible death.
"Ren! Stop running away from me right now!" Anna shouted over the deafening roar of the panicked crowds.
Her voice cut through the noise of the city, sounding incredibly sharp and highly demanding.
Ren completely ignored her shouting. He kept cruising through the dense crowds, using his entire body to force a path forward. He ran block after block, dodging abandoned vehicles and weaving through tight groups of frightened people.
He did not stop running until he finally broke free of the main crowd. He reached a dark, deserted side street far away from the main road. He stopped there, bending over and placing his hands on his knees to take a deep and desperate breath.
Anna caught up to him almost instantly. Before Ren could even fully catch his breath or stand up straight, Anna lunged forward. She quickly pushed Ren back against the cold brick wall of an old building.
With startling speed and immense physical strength, she grabbed both of his hands and locked them tightly against the rough bricks above his head.
She stepped in extremely close, pressing her body weight against him to keep him entirely trapped. She looked deeply into his eyes. Her expression was completely unreadable, shifting between anger and deep desperation.
Then, her voice changed completely. It became heavy, echoing with a strange and terrifying resonance. She had activated her command giving power.
"You will not leave me again," Anna muttered, her voice practically vibrating against his chest.
Ren felt the strange energy wash over his mind, attempting to force his body into absolute obedience. But the energy simply fizzled out and vanished. Ren looked at her in a very weird and detached way. He did not blink, and he did not struggle against her grip.
"It will not work on me now," Ren muttered softly, his voice completely devoid of any emotion.
Anna gasped loudly. Her eyes widened in absolute shock as the realization hit her. The magical command had completely failed.
She instantly let go of his hands and stepped back, stumbling slightly. She grabbed her own head with both of her hands, her fingers digging deeply into her hair.
"Ren, I am so sorry," Anna muttered, her voice shaking violently. "I do not know what I am doing right now. I really do not know what is wrong with me." She looked exactly as if she was deeply confused by her own sudden actions and her own intense aggression.
Before Ren could respond to her apology, the shadows shifted in the dark alleyway beside them. Ren noticed a distinct silhouette of a woman appearing from the darkest corner of the narrow alley.
Ren immediately squinted his eyes to get a better look in the terrible lighting. As the figure took a slow step forward, the dim streetlamp illuminated her features. He saw bright red hair. He saw a face that was incredibly familiar to him.
Pure terror gripped his entire body. Ren quickly backed away from the alleyway, pressing his back completely flat against the brick wall. His breathing became incredibly shallow and incredibly fast.
Anna instantly noticed the raw fear burning in the eyes of Ren. She stopped holding her head and quickly turned around.
She immediately stepped directly in front of Ren, using her own body to protect him from whatever was hiding in the dark alleyway.
Ren peaked over the shoulder of Anna. He took a much closer look at the mysterious woman. To his absolute surprise, he noticed that the terrifying woman standing in front of him was actually crying.
"Faceless Woman," Ren whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of fear and pure disbelief.
Anna barely knew what that name meant. She had only heard a few dark and terrifying rumors about the entity known as the Faceless Woman. But seeing the absolute dread on the face of Ren was all the confirmation she needed. She did not hesitate for a single second.
"Get away from us right now!" Anna shouted at the top of her lungs, fully activating her command giving power once again. The sheer force of her voice echoed down the entire street.
The command hit the woman with incredible force. The woman halted suddenly, freezing entirely in her tracks.
Ren took this opportunity to look even closer. He could clearly see heavy tears coming from her eyes, rolling down her pale cheeks and dropping onto her clothes.
But before Anna could even react or attempt to follow up with another command, the terrifying woman broke the hold.
Suddenly, the woman charged forward in absolute super speed. She moved so incredibly fast that she looked like a blurred line in the darkness.
She bashed into Anna with overwhelming physical force. Anna was lifted entirely off her feet. She got thrown backward like a tennis ball hit by a professional player, flying far away down the empty street until she crashed heavily onto the hard pavement.
The woman stopped her charge instantly, standing directly in front of Ren. Ren had a deeply disgusted and extremely uncomfortable look on his face. He wanted to run, but his legs refused to move.
She reached out and forcefully grabbed the hand of Ren.
"Come, we should go," she muttered, her voice sounding strange and hollow.
But Ren did not even shake from where he was standing. He planted his feet firmly on the ground, showcasing his newly increased strength. He easily resisted her pull, refusing to be dragged away into the darkness.
Arakawa Mei, who was indeed the legendary Faceless Woman, looked at his stubborn expression. She leaned in closer, her face inches from his, and she whispered softly.
"You are in deep trouble, baby. Come with me. I will tell you exactly what is going on."
Ren stood frozen in place for a long moment. He looked down the street where Anna had fallen, and then he looked back at the tear stained face of Arakawa Mei.
He was incredibly hesitant. But ultimately, he relaxed his muscles and let Mei take him away into the deep shadows. Because even though he was terrified, he desperately wanted to know what was going on.
And at this point, it was abundantly clear to him that this mysterious crying woman would not hurt him in the conventional way at least.
Meanwhile, a terrifying scene of apocalyptic destruction was unfolding far away at the dark sea.
The gigantic red monster was raging wildly in the deep water. The beast was utterly destroying the Lan base in pure, unadulterated anger. This was a completely different level of rage unlike anything seen before.
Massive steel structures were being crushed like fragile toys, and huge concrete walls were being smashed into tiny pieces.
The scene was pure chaos. Show the monster going completely crazy in the ocean. It thrashed its massive body around, creating gigantic waves that crashed against the remaining ruins. Several of her huge limbs that had gotten cut off during the previous brutal battle had strangely mutated.
The severed pieces of flesh had been turned into horrifying crab like monsters. These disgusting new creatures were now scrambling rapidly out of the water, and they were being spread around the whole area to cause even more destruction and terror.
But as the giant red monster tried to move away from the completely ruined Lan base, something incredible happened. Suddenly, her massive stomach started to shine with a brilliant, blinding golden light.
The golden light grew brighter and brighter until it finally exploded outward with a massive shockwave. The flesh of the monster tore open violently, revealing a truly beautiful angel coming right out of the glowing wound.
The giant red monster had been already severely weakened by the continuous fighting and the previous injuries. Because of this weakness, the glorious angel sister was finally able to completely escape from her fleshy prison.
The angel hovered gracefully in the air above the raging waters. Her beautiful eyes looked absolutely everywhere, taking in the chaotic destruction of the ocean base.
Then, she looked especially closely at the giant red monster. She stared deeply at the massive eye of the monster, an eye which was now completely full of giant tears.
The angel looked at the dark ocean water one last time. Then, the beautiful angel suddenly took flight. She shot vertically straight up into the dark sky at immense speed, and she completely disappeared into the high clouds above, leaving the weeping monster entirely alone in the ruined sea.
Meanwhile, far away from the ruined base, a small and jagged rock protruded from the violent waves of the ocean.
Chiyo suddenly emerged from the dark water, pulling herself up onto the slippery rock. She was dragging something very heavy with her. It was the body of a man. The body looked absolutely terrible. It looked exactly like a dried up old husk, completely drained of all life and vitality.
Chiyo pulled the body completely out of the water. She sat on the rock and immediately wrapped her arms around the terrible husk. She was still hugging it tightly, pressing it against her chest exactly like it was her most precious thing in the entire world.
Chiyo kept crying heavily. Her tears mixed with the salty ocean water on her face.
"Idiot, tell me! Do you love me? Is our love real, or are we just a bad joke?" she cried out loudly into the empty night.
She kept shouting the painful questions over and over again, her voice breaking with intense sorrow and deep despair. But the old husk like body of the man just laid there motionless. He looked completely dead, offering absolutely no response to her desperate cries.
Chiyo finally stopped shouting. She slowly turned her head and looked at the far away horizon. She could see where the giant red monster was located. She noticed that the massive beast had stopped advancing completely, showing clear signs that it had finally grew tired from the rampage.
Chiyo hugged the dead body even tighter against her chest. She narrowed her eyes and she muttered to herself over the sound of the crashing waves.
"Without a body for her to take over, she is putting herself in immense danger," Chiyo whispered softly. "And there is absolutely no other woman in this entire world that can take her other than Lan Xinyue or her."
Chiyo looked down at the dark water swirling around the rock. She took a deep breath, and she muttered a final, desperate warning to a person who was not even there to hear it.
"So, Meiling," Chiyo muttered, her voice trembling with intense fear and absolute certainty. "Run. Run far away right now and never look back. Because if Xinyue becomes her, absolutely all of this will be for nothing."
