System Of The Undead

Chapter 297: Hope?

Chapter 297: Hope?

Brayden had unknowingly led these people back to the camp, there was no telling what intention they had but Brayden was aware that these people could prove to be a threat.

There was no reason to deny themselves a chance at a future just because of man’s inherent nature for wickedness.

They had to give this a chance because if it was as they said then there was no doubt that this would secure their future.

Brayden’s aura was different, his playful demeanour had all but vanished.

Corey walked behind him, watching him like a hawk about to swoop down and take its prey.

"Tell me..." Brayden broke the silence, he knew that the community they had come from could be linked with Jason and Franklin yet they didn’t see either during their watch.

"Why did you take your time to track us this far?" Brayden was suspicious, they didn’t need so many people if they simply wished to talk.

"We have kids in our community, the parents were unsettled after it was reported that a few living there were scouting the area. I don’t know about you but humans are far more dangerous than the undead," Corey pointed out.

An analogy that Brayden understood was that they killed to eat you but humans sought much more and in a world where rules have become obsolete, there was no telling if morality existed anymore.

With that said, it couldn’t be helped because this was the current state of the world.

Brayden couldn’t give up on it because the moment he did, they would truly be defeated.

"Children are the future of this world but what kind of future would they have if we aren’t there to guide them?" Brayden responded and this surprised Corey, this wasn’t the response he sought.

"There is no future in this world, it would come to an end in the end because the next evolutionary step of humanity is here to wipe us out, they are our extinction event," Corey couldn’t help himself, he wanted to show Brayden just how foolish his ideals were.

"If you truly believed that, why are you here?" Brayden questioned, prompting Corey to clamp his mouth shut.

He might have said too much because he just showed his true intentions but luckily for him, this was more of a rhetorical question than anything else.

"You haven’t abandoned hope and that is why you are here," Brayden said but he couldn’t be more wrong.

Corey had a sickening grin on his face because he was going to take pleasure in this massacre in a few minutes.

They arrived at the camp but it was scanty, there was barely anyone there with only a few people, less than half of the people that were here just a year ago.

Corey was surprised by the state of the camp because they didn’t look like a threat but the few women that he spotted caught his eyes.

They were ladies that had no-so-great faces but their bodies were another story, they couldn’t be picky and he could tell that his men shared the same thoughts as him.

They were going to do more than just kill them, they were going to have some fun.

Corey didn’t know if he should begin the massacre but he wasn’t stupid, he needed to minimize casualties on their end.

If he came in guns blazing, there is no doubt that they would suffer more losses than needed.so Corey had to wear his diplomatic hat in the meantime but if he knew that Rachel and Glenn were on their way, he would certainly have taken a different approach to the situation.

"Follow me," Brayden instructed him and Corey looked over his shoulder to instruct his men to stay here.

There was something off about them and even the ladies there sensed it, none of them approached these men even though the men had undressed them with their eyes.

Sam stood in front of the woman he was about to kill, he didn’t have any problems taking a life he wouldn’t even remember tomorrow but she wanted to live.

"Hey, stay still. If you try to fight back, I might just get a little excited," Sam said and while this sounded sexual, one would think he was referring to sex just as the woman presumed but Sam wasn’t talking about anything so trivial.

He knew that if she fought him, he wouldn’t make her death a slow one hence what he meant by excitement.

"P-Please...! If I give you what you want, will you let me live?" She pleaded and this was where Sam got confused because if she gave him what he wanted, she would be dead.

She began to slowly spread her legs but before she could even complete this action, she felt a concussive blow to the side of her head because Sam had kicked her right in the temple.

"Are you dumb? Do you think this is about sex? You rotten piece of shit," Sam was disgusted that she even thought of something like this in this situation.

That kick would have given a normal person brain damage but she wasn’t normal.

"I-I have something you want..." She muttered weakly as she tried to crawl away from Sam.

"I know and that’s your life," Sam responded, walking behind her as she tried her best to escape but she was too slow.

"No... I have no idea what is going on but I heard a voice in my head telling me to come here, I don’t know why but I trusted it..." She said, turning on her back to look Sam in the eyes.

Sam stopped in his tracks, standing right before her as a moment of silence followed.

"Any last words?" Sam questioned, clearly not listening to anything she had said but Sam noticed something before he could pull the trigger.

That was a bite mark embedded on the side of her neck but it wasn’t done in this fight. He could tell it was a zombie that bit her because the residue of the meteorite oozed from her wounds but why didn’t she turn?

"You... You’re immune?" Sam questioned, coming into contact with the fragment was one thing but being bitten by the zombie itself was another. There has been no known survivor except now and this was the only thing that made Sam reconsider pulling the trigger.
