System Of The Undead

Chapter 284: Chronos’ Secret

Chapter 284: Chronos’ Secret

Sam was perplexed by what his eyes had seen, there was a huge piece of fragment before him.

And he couldn’t help but admire it, this didn’t mean he wasn’t drawn to it.

If anything, that huge chunk of glowing rock was the most beautiful thing to him at this moment in time.

There was nothing that compared to its beauty and Sam began walking towards it like a body on autopilot.

Sam felt this weird sensation overcome him, it felt ecstatic and he couldn’t wrap his head around it

But before he could make contact with the object, he was pulled back to reality by an unknown force, stopping in his tracks mere inches away from the fragment.

"What am I doing?" Sam thought to himself, looking around to take in his environment, he hadn’t even swept the place to make sure he was alone.

That was the first thing he should have done but Sam could sense it in the air, there was no one here.

It was abandoned, not even the undead could be seen.

This was a fragment so they should be swarming around here so why weren’t they?

Sam took a huge step and his breathing lessened but there was nothing that could be done.

Sam dropped the fragment on the ground but there was something strange going on with him as he looked genuinely surprised that it was in his possession.

"Where am I?" Sam questioned like he had just woken up from a nap.

"Clementine...?" Sam muttered to himself, there was a sense of unease around him.

He looked dazed but not once did he look like he was afraid.

Sam understood that this fragment had crawled up into his mind and fucked up his mind.

He took out his gun and pointed it to his temple.

"I died that day..." Sam muttered to himself as a smile slowly creased his face, ready to pull the trigger.

[Stop Sam] A voice echoed in his mind, he didn’t know if it was his mind playing tricks on him but that was a possibility.

"Who said that?" Sam questioned, looking around to see who it was that was there.

He couldn’t trace the voice but he was on guard, the gun that was pointed at himself moments ago was now pointed right in front of him. Sam became paranoid but he knew he needed to calm himself.

There was no one here, it was all in his head and the moment he did, he realized that the voice sounded familiar.

"Jason?" Sam questioned but he shouldn’t be surprised considering he believed that it was Jason leading him here.

[You have arrived but you have to be quick, It knows...] The voice warned.

"What should I do?" Sam requested, showing that he was not only willing to cooperate with whatever Jason had become but if this was a hallucination, then it simply meant these were his thoughts or so he believed.

But there was no way that he would have just arrived at this location with the voices in his head, he had to have been led here.

"I must be going fucking crazy..." Sam muttered to himself with a look of disbelief.

[You are not going crazy, Sam... I need you to destroy that fragment..." The voice commanded.

Sam wondered how he was going to do this considering he didn’t have any weapons strong enough to accomplish this feat.

[HURRY UP!!!] The voice screamed and before Sam could think of a way to destroy that fragment, a stampede running right towards him could be heard.

The floor shook, the air became heavy and the very ground felt like a min quake was occurring.

Sam rushed to the window and realized zombies nearing the hundreds were running right towards him.

There was no way in hell he would survive this should they reach him yet Sam was calm, he didn’t panic as the life in his eyes slowly faded.

"Finally, some fucking action..." Sam muttered to himself and instead of taking cover, he charged right towards the army of zombies but something strange occurred.

The floor of the building warped around his ankles, stopping him in place.

"What!?" Sam muttered to himself, the building was alive but this shouldn’t be possible.

[Do you get it now?] The voice asked and Sam fell quiet as he came to realize what the purpose of these meteorites was.

They weren’t just after the life on Earth, they were after the entire planet.

This was a lot worse than anybody had anticipated, it didn’t matter if mankind could hide from the zombies, if the parasite could take control of the planet itself then everything would be over.

The earth itself would go extinct.

Sam managed to remove his feet by sacrificing his shoe, Sam rushed forward but the fragment seemed to not only have limited control of the building but a limited reach as well.

It hadn’t assimilated with the foundation just yet but Sam knew he had to find a way to get rid of this chunk of rock.

He ran up the stairs and barricaded the stairs with whatever he could find, which was barely enough because the zombies had climbers, there was no way that they wouldn’t attempt to scale the building and come through the window.

These were evolved zombies and Sam knew he had to fight smart but he also knew that destroying that piece of meteorite should be his priority.

It was ironic in a sense, it was almost like Jason had become a pseudo system, he could communicate with his allies that had been corrupted by the fragment.

How he got access to such a power was unknown or if he still had a physical body.

Either way, Sam was brought here by whatever this was and that was because it trusted him to accomplish this task.

Sam chuckled, he was getting excited and he saw a matchbox, if this wasn’t luck then what was?

Sam noticed a bottle of liquor lying on the ground and he couldn’t believe his luck.

This building was composed of wood so he should be able to ignite it from within with these things but after he did, then what?

He would still be surrounded by over a hundred zombies with nowhere to hide yet Sam didn’t hesitate for a moment.

The door crashed open violently and the zombies tried to get past the barricade, he could hear noises on the walls outside.

"Fuck, you fuckers must be hungry," Sam mocked as he drank some of the booze before pouring it around the room.

He took the matchbox and tried to ignite it but to no avail, it was old and past its expiry date so there was a possibility that It wouldn’t light at all but Sam wasn’t going to give up.

The barricade was slowly giving way, Sam could see one of the heads popping out, clawing away in his direction like it could reach him but a smaller zombie managed to slip through.

It was the body of a two-year-old and a normal person would have had reservations about killing a ’kid’ but not Sam, he threw his knife with pinpoint accuracy, landing right into the kid’s forehead.

"Bullseye..." Sam said with a satisfying smirk and like clockwork, the matches finally lit.

Simultaneously, the zombies broke through the barrier and the window behind him shattered, they rushed towards Sam like he was the last meal on earth and that was when he dropped the matches

to the ground and the entire area was engulfed in flames.
