Chapter 274: The Variant Returns
Chapter 274: The Variant Returns
The zombies were roaming and the fact that they were avoiding the area of the community made it easier for them to expand.
They expanded their territory and this included their farmland but the barrier they could use wasn’t as secure as the gates of the main community.
If anything, they could live here for the rest of their lives and have a semblance of a normal life.
The world had gone to shit and technological tools had reached their end for the power source of houses slowly lost their illumination.
They were in the dark ages and slowly, man regressed to a state that undid thousands of years of evolution in a single year.
"Man, I cannot believe this place..." A man in his mid-thirties pointed out as they stumbled upon an uncontaminated lake that had all the fish they could eat.
The fish weren’t infected and the water was clean, this was heaven for anyone in this period.
"Shut up, we cannot stay here for too long. If it is like this, it means someone is keeping it this way..." The other man responded; he was in his mid-twenties but he looked a lot older and this was due to the stress that the world had put him under.
"You’re right, Muhammad... We should catch our fill and leave before they return..." The older man said, looking around he could see there was a sign of life here.
There wasn’t anyone here at the moment and he wouldn’t want to be here when they returned.
"Or we could...." Muhammad paused but it was clear what he was suggesting.
"No, we cannot Muhammad... If we do that, there is no coming back from it," The older man said.
"Look around you, the world is gone... And there is nothing saying murder is bad or do you see lions feeling bad for killing each other?" Muhammad barked but the older man wasn’t having it.
He took a handful of fish and kept them in a bed, they were fresh, and it had been ages since they saw anything alive.
Animals and humans alike but then there was a thought that crossed Muhammad’s head.
"Nate... What if it is a woman?" Muhammad asked but Nate was too busy getting all they needed so they could leave.
"A woman? If a woman did this, something tells me she is far more dangerous than a man," Nate said, this was easy to decipher because this world was a kill or be killed and if she hadn’t been killed, it meant that she had killed.
This was how she survived for so long and Nate wouldn’t want to be the one to test her patience as she would definitely have the means to kill them.
Muhammad was a work colleague that he happened to be with when the world went to shit and he couldn’t understand why he slowly regressed into a degenerate.
Muhammad had only spoken about doing these things but he never actually carried it out.
They had encountered a few people at the beginning but nothing of this sort happened.
But Nate could no longer predict what he would do and they soon heard footsteps approaching them.
Nate and Muhammad took cover behind a nearby tree to see who it was but they couldn’t make out the feature of the person thanks to the hoodie they had on.
It was hard to even tell what gender they might be but this didn’t mean that they were about to take their eyes off this individual.
"Are you sure this is a smart thing to do?" Muhammad asked Nate but Nate couldn’t answer.
He couldn’t wrap his head around it but this person gave him a major ick.
"There is something wrong with that person," Nate pointed out in a hushed voice, hiding like they had done something wrong when their only crime was eating but Nate soon realized that they had made a mistake.
Their feet had made an impression into the ground that created a trail that led right to where they were and whoever this person was, noticed.
Their head turned in their direction and looked right at them, Nate didn’t know what came over him but he ran as fast as he could without even informing his partner.
And behind him, he heard a shrieking cry.
It was no doubt the cry of Muhammad but Nate didn’t look back.
He didn’t know what that thing was but it wasn’t human and he was right.
The zombies had evolved to the point of individuality, the evolved zombies each had distinctive traits and personalities that set them apart from one another.
This zombie had used the lake as bait like a fisherman would a fish, to draw in humans.
No human was able to resist this because it was a rare occurrence.
And now they were wandering with the perfect human mask but unfortunately for Nate, he too couldn’t get away.

"Two bodies this time?" Bella, who had cut her hair into a buzz cut could be seen saying but the thing that made it strange was that these zombies had no intention of turning their victims into zombies but simply killed for sport. It had a similar pattern to the ones encountered by the military sometime back.
"That is indeed strange, I would have said this was fine but a wild animal but signs are showing that this was a person.
"You know you don’t have to come out here yourself Bella," A lady said, it was unusual for a Specter to personally partake in these things.
But Bella didn’t understand the sudden evolution of zombies but she knew that maybe she could find a clue as to what happened to Jason.
She has been after this particular zombie for quite some time as it seemed to have a pattern.
But each time she thinks she just might be on its trail, it disappears into thin air.
But why was it hunting humans for sport?
