Chapter 226: Who Is This Mysterious Man?
Chapter 226: Who Is This Mysterious Man?
Jason made headway and came to a stop not too far from his final destination, he couldn’t believe he had been played but he was beginning to see people for what they truly were.
Not everyone deserved the benefit of the doubt nor could everyone be saved.
Some people just needed to be put down, Jason was curious what the limits of his powers were.
This power that they were talking about, what was his?
Carl shouldn’t be here, it was selfish of him to accept the young boy’s request to join the raiders.
He thought he could protect him but Jason was beginning to understand that he lacked the power to protect anything. Jason knew he had limitations but the stronger he became, the more apparent those limitations became.
There were far too many things he didn’t understand and this was an irresponsible assumption on his end.
"Carl, I’m sorry for roping you into this," Jason apologized, realizing that his carelessness nearly got the young boy killed.
Carl didn’t know why he was apologizing because he made a conscious choice to follow Jason.
"I’m surprised such dangers exist outside the wall but I’m glad I know this threat," Carl said sternly.
He was going to succeed his mother as the eventual ruler of the community with more knowledge of the zombies, he would be a far better leader.
Jason was nearing the location, the tracks were coming to an end but the possibility that this was another trap was high.
"Take the wheel," Jason commanded Carl as he opened the door, ready to jump out.
He needed the car in constant motion to not only get Carl out of danger but to distort the enemy’s perception of his position.
Jason had let the sword inside the car while suppressing his aura so he could move unbothered.
The zombies would naturally be drawn to it but there was no way they could catch up with the car so he wasn’t worried.
This was something that he needed to do, he couldn’t let any of them die.
Jason rushed towards the location and found out there was an entrance to a rather big house.
He knew they were inside but what was this, there was something that he sensed but couldn’t make out.
"I have a bad feeling about this," Jason thought to himself but he decided to risk it for the sake of his friends.
If push comes to shove, he would use Nexus and get out of any sticky situation he couldn’t handle. He had lost his cool earlier and knew he couldn’t afford such slip-ups.
Jason entered the building and to his surprise, it not only had electricity but there was some music playing.
Jason looked around and noticed that there was no one in the compartment of the house.
Did he sneak into the building successfully? That was highly unlikely because his enemies were smart.
He saw signs of life but also clues that told him Dimitris and Glenn were here.
Jason knew he had to inspect the rooms but he also had to be careful.
He wandered and noticed that things weren’t going to be easy because all it took to end it all was one wrong move.
However, Ana came out to meet Jason and the young man was ready to execute her on the spot.
"I don’t wish to harm you, Jason. I only did this because he wishes me to do so," Ana responded but she was devoid of emotions.
That was to be expected, she was dead after all but Jason was wondering what his next course of action should be.
"You, what do you want with me?" Jason asked, he knew he needed to buy enough time until he found out if his friends were safe.
"I’m dead, I do not have any wants or desires, all I do is for him," Ana responded.
"Your friends are safe but I must ask you to desist from any form of violence or that will change," Ana said and just as Jason suspected, they planned to use them as hostages to get him to cooperate.
At times like this, he wished he was a lot more like Sam because then, he would be able to make the hard decision but he was also glad that he wasn’t like him or he would have lost his humanity long ago.
"Who is this person you keep talking about?" Jason asked but Ana didn’t give him a verbal response because she was aware that there was only so much he needed to know.
"You will know soon enough but in the meantime, make yourself comfortable," Ana said.
There was no doubt that she was a zombie but there was something different about her.
She wasn’t just an evolved zombie, she was an intelligent one.
These shouldn’t exist and Jason knew that there had to be a logical explanation as to why they did. Jason wasn’t going to accept it but he also noted that Chronos was unusually quiet.
It couldn’t be the fragment, six months was too short a time to evolve to this extent.
There had to be a secret and whoever wanted to meet him must have those secrets.
"It speaks to you, doesn’t it?" Ana blurted out and this was the same thing the other person had said.
It was no coincidence and Jason knew without a fact that they were aware of the existence of Chronos or at least, understood the concept behind it. Did they have it too?
Chronos did say these fragments of him housed different aspects of itself so did this mean different systems existed with different motives?
"I don’t know what you’re talking about," Jason knew he had to withhold as much information as possible otherwise he might let loose a weakness.
Ana didn’t try to persuade him because she had no desire for knowledge.
Jason was beginning to wonder if there was truth to there being an ability to control zombies but it didn’t belong to them but rather, another person.
But he soon heard footsteps descending from the stairs and Jason’s face went from neutral to utter shock.
"T-That’s impossible!"
